Compounded medications are essentially made from scratch by mixing individual ingredients in a strength and dosage form specified by your physician. Until the mid 20th century all prescriptions were compounded by pharmacists. Medicinal manufacturing evolved and compounding was seen less. But with mass produced medications meeting a "one size fits all" concept, compounding fills in the gaps to meet patient needs not currently being met by mass produced drugs.
